There are several different ways to join our group for long or short term periods. While at UDP, researchers will qualify as a member of the Chilean community with 10% privileged access on all telescopes in Chile, including ALMA, ESO/Paranal’s VLT and 4m VISTA, La Silla’s 3.5m NTT and 3.6m and 2.2m telescopes, Gemini-South 8m, Carnegie’s 2.5m and Magellan 2×6.5m, CTIO’s 4m (Blanco), SOAR 4m, as well as ASTE and APEX. By ~2020 Chile will host ~70% of all the major astronomical infrastructures in the world, including the last generation of telescopes (LSST, GMT, E-ELT, and CTA).

We are now accepting applications for our new PhD program in astrophysics!

The Ph.D. is 4 years long and students are expected to start research activities during their first semester in one of the following research areas:

Planetary systems: extrasolar planets, high-contrast imaging, planet formation, protoplanetary disks, and laboratory astrophysics of cosmic dust.

Stellar and Galactic astronomy: galactic archeology, stellar spectroscopy, stellar evolution, and galactic transients.

Extragalactic astronomy: Active Galactic Nuclei, supernovae, extragalactic transients, submillimeter galaxies, and galaxy evolution.

Requirements:

Applicants should have an undergraduate and/or master’s degree in Astronomy (or closely related fields), full-time commitment, and a good command of the English language.

Application materials:

a) Motivation letter (in English) indicating your reasons for applying to the Ph.D. program at UDP, research experience (if any), research interests, and career plans and goals. The letter should also indicate preferred starting date (March or August, 2019).
