The AGN dichotomy as seen from the point of view of ionized outflows

Abstract:
Although AGN are divided in many “flavours”, the Unified Model explains these observational properties with a line-of-sight-dependent scenario, in which a dusty torus makes the emission anisotropic. However there is growing observational evidence that type 1 and type 2 AGN are actually characterized by intrinsically different physical properties. Here we present the incidence and properties of ionized outflows in a sample of ~650 hard X-ray detected AGN. Using optical spectroscopy from the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS) we are able to reveal the faint wings of the [OIII] emission lines associated with outflows. Our sample is almost unbiased against obscuration or AGN types and covers a large range of luminosity, therefore the occurrence of outflows and its dependance with the different AGN power tracers is providing us a new point of view on the unification scenarios.
