The Astronomy Nucleus of Universidad Diego Portales is looking to hire at least one faculty member through the CONICYT initiative “Convocatoria a la Subvención a la Instalación en la Academia”. The requirements are a Ph.D. in astronomy or a closely related field obtained after October 1st, 2010 and a demonstrated ability and commitment to excellence in independent research. The CONICYT initiative is only open to Chilean nationals or foreign nationals with a permanent residence (“permanencia definitiva”) who are not currently faculty at another institution. Successful candidates will join a young and active astronomy group of five faculty and five postdocs working on a broad range of research topics. The position is open to all areas of observational, experimental, and theoretical astrophysics. We also encourage applications in fields of astronomy and astrophysics more closely related to engineering, including big data and instrumentation. The primary qualification is excellence in research. The position carry teaching duties in astronomy at the undergraduate level, with a load of no more than two courses per year. The new faculty will also be expected to actively participate in establishing a graduate program in astronomy at UDP.
The successful candidates will have access to 10% of all telescope time in Chile, including ALMA, VLT, Gemini, Magellan, and other telescopes in the country, including in the future facilities such as the GMT and the E-ELT.
