Galaxy Clusters in the Age of AI

Prof. Yuan Yuan Sun, University of Kentucky

IEA meeting room

Galaxy clusters are powerful probes of both cosmology and astrophysics, yet their complex baryonic physics poses major challenges for interpretation. The intracluster medium (ICM) exhibits a rich range of dynamical and thermodynamical phenomena—including turbulence, shocks, cold fronts, and multiphase gas condensation—that must be disentangled to extract robust physical insights. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) offer transformative opportunities for cluster science. In this talk, I will present how integrating domain knowledge with modern AI techniques can accelerate discovery in cluster astrophysics and provide new insights into the baryon cycle, feedback processes, and the role of clusters as cosmological probes.
