Manuel Aravena

I am a full professor at IEA. My expertise focuses on studying the interstellar and circumgalactic medium (ISM and CGM) of galaxies to understand how they form, grow and evolve, using a variety of facilities including ALMA, JWST, VLA, etc. I am involved in some forthcoming submm survey telescopes like CCAT and CMB-S4.

Current Position: Full Professor (Titular)

Projects

I study the formation and evolution of galaxies through cosmic time, using a wide variety of observations obtained with ground-based and space telescopes, including ALMA, JWST, VLT, Gemini, Magellan, HST, etc. I am also actively working on several projects to study the environment of galaxies and formation of structures at early times.

I am the PI of the JWST GO3 ORCHIDS program (Origin of the [CII] Halos in Distant. Systems; 43 hrs; ID 5974) and I am co-PI of a JWST GO2 program to investigate the properties of a starbursting galaxy merger at the core of a forming protocluster at z=4.5 (17 hrs; ID 4265).

I am co-PI of three ALMA large programs: The ALMA Spectroscopic Survey of the Hubble UDF (ASPECS; www.aspecs.info), CRISTAL: A survey of gas, dust, and stars in star-forming galaxies when the Universe was ~1 billion years old (www.alma-cristal.info) and the CHAMPS survey: A Wide-Area Comprehensive Survey of the Dusty Universe.

Highlights

  • I have worked at NRAO, ESO and the ALMA observatory as a postdoctoral researcher.
  • Co-founder of the astronomy group at UDP, and founder of the AGATHA (AGN and Galaxies Thorugh the Ages) group at IEA/UDP.
  • I am actively participating in several international collaborations, including the South Pole Telescope (SPT) SMG collaboration, the CCAT Observatory working group (WG), the CMB-S4 Observatory sources & transients WG , the APEX/CONCERTO collaboration, the ALMA REBELS large program, and collaborating in several projects with the COSMOS team.
  • I served in the ALMA Science Advisory Committee, and currently, I am the chair of the Chilean Review Committee and part of the ALMA DDT committee. I also served as Director of the Nucleus of Astronomy/IEA for two years and participated in several review committees for observatory proposals and ANID funding proposals.
  • I am associated researcher of the CATA basal program, and I have PI’ed several ANID funding projects
